I've noticed that my guide rod head is showing signs of wear. After calling Ruger, I was told that it was normal but I'm a little concerned that it will continue to bend.

Anyone have any bad experiences with the guide rod?

I just checked mine and can find noting I would consider noteworthy.

A picture of your would be helpful.

I'm not sure if the wear that I'm talking about would show up in a picture. I'm just a little concerned that the very thin head on the guide rod will wear, bend and/or break off. Actually, it shows minor signs of wear already and I've only put about 40 or so rounds through it. Just wondered if anyone else had fired more and noticed any serious wear or breakage.

I'm anxious to see if they changed their position on this. I've probably put another 5 rounds through it and didn't see any additional wear.

Let us know what they say, when they call you back.

Just got my LCP two weeks ago. Serial #373-33XXX

I've run about 150 round thru it and noticed that the guide rod head is pretty hammered. I've seen acouple of threads here about issues with it and how some scoring, scratches are OK. I've heard that they are cheap but I'd still like to know how to prevent this. Others seem to not have this particular problem.

The gun has fired perfectly with no issues. I've used 5 different types of ammo with no problems. Very pleased otherwise.

Here's some pics:

I've got two LCPs with over 1000 rounds each and my guide rod heads look worse than yours but have caused no issues. The edge seems to roll over or flatten but has not broken off any metal on either of mine. I wouldn't worry about to be honest...doesn't seem to be causing a problem.

I would say your guide rod is damaged and should be replaced. I can almost guarantee you if you e-mailed that pic to Ruger Service Dept they would mail you a new one ;D

I just talked to Ruger about this same problem today. My guide rod looks a little worse than yours however and my springs were warped. They are sending out new springs and a guide rod. I hope they do the same for you...

Contacted Ruger and they sent me another guide rod. Just got it. Will install it and see if it helps. I see that others have received both a guide rod and springs. Will report back later.

It would be nice if the Elsie Pea store had them. Nice be able to get them along with a few other items and save a bit on shipping....

My take on the guide rod from my experience and other threads on the forum is that it is a part the will wear some....a light (shoeshine style) polish on the rod smooths things and reduces the wear process...

I had some wear and light scoring during the first 200 or so rounds.....did the shoeshine polish and also lightly polished the hole in the frame that the guide rod slides thru....+ some Slide Glide...

As soon as they came out, I added a 12# Wolff recoil spring kit....they feel smoother in the gun...(yes...a subjective feeling at best....but it is there).....

Now after over 1700 rounds the guide rod shows a little more wear but it is not excessive nor is there damage to the head of guide rod as in the pics.

I would for sure I would replace a guide rod that was peened as the one pictured .....Ruger seems to agree as they send replacements for free....I also have a spare guide rod on the shelf......(From Ruger)
