AMMUNITION POLL "What's been best or worst for you ?"

I looked around the forum and unless I missed it, I didn't see any threads on the best or worst ammunition. Thought it would be useful to start one.

What ammunition works best or worst for your Elsiepea?

Until I get a chance to try some Buffalo Bore or Critical Defense, I am sticking with Golden Sabers. Zero problems so far.
For practice, WWB works well for me. Reloads for practice are in the works, also.

The ammo I have fed to my LCP (polished ramp and throat) is as follows:

WWB - Works great 100%
Speer Gold-Dots - Works great 100%
Federal Hydra Shok - Works great 100%
PMC Gold Starfires - Works great 100%
S&B 92gr - Works great 100%
Aguila95 FMJ - Works great 100%
WWB Winclean - YUCK! 10% Misfires from poor lead-less primers
Remington UMC - YUCK! Constant 3-point hangs during feeding

Before recall, I would get misfires on all types of ammo. Here's what I get since the recall work was done.

Matech FMJ: Blech. In 200 rounds, averaged several misfires per 50rd box. Not recommended.
Winchester white box FMJ: 100%. Recommended.
DoubleTap JHP (Gold dots): 100%. Recommended.

thats the issue, what works best in mine indeed might not workat all in your handgun. Test and verify..

then just shoot it like u stole it ;D

all work in mine.

and will all make the BG just as hurt. use what works .. I usually recommend 20 round boxes to start, of a few types....then find what works best and shoot the daylights out of it.

WWB for range, and so far I have been using Hornady Tap for SD. I cant wait to get my hands on some of that Critical Defense.

The Hornady CD seems to be good stuff. It feeds and shoots well in mine. I like getting 25 for less than the price of 20, also.

Remington for me... I found a sale shortly after I got my LCP; $6.99/box. I have NO IDEA how this sale happened, but I bought everything they had in stock (like 12 boxes?)! I'm no idiot! Tried to go to every other Meijer store within a 20mi radius; no one else had a sale like this!

Anyway, I've also shot some Winchester silver tips; run fine with both

Before "tuning", NIB.

WORST: Cor-bon 95gr JHP (jammed almost every round)

BEST: Golden Saber and WWB 95gr

Awaiting re-test after "tuning"

Hornady Critical Defense is working for me. I havn't tried a bunch of different stuff. But based on great reviews I settled in on the Hornady stuff.

I may experiment in the future. But for one who doesn't want to try everything there is he would do well to just start with the Hornady to see if that will work well in his gun or not. Chances are that it will.

Other than the marketing video put out by Hornady, have you actually seen any real reviews of Critical Defense? This is a product that I would like to embrace, but I have not seen any real world reviews against other modern SD ammo brands.

I can put up dozens of reviews where Remington Golden Sabers come out on top, but not a single one for Hornady Critical Defense... Help me out if you can.

naw there are some pretty nice guys over on that forum, some are pretty regular posters here even. can't blame them for being pissed. They see kt loosing market share big time from all the new 380 intro's coming on line. they once ruled that caliber...

I can't give you a gun mag type of review but I can say I fired about 100 rounds of the Hornady Critical Defense and they were flawless in function and very accurate. Winchester Silvertips have been 100 percent as well. I now keep my LCP loaded with the Hornady (except the last 2 in the mag are Buffalo Bore 100gr Hard-Cast FN).

Mine has worked 100% so far with everything I've tried which includes Winchester white box target loads, Federal Target loads, Federal Hydro-Shok, Remington Golden Saber, CCI Gold Dot, and Hornady Critical Defense.

I can't give you a gun mag type of review but I can say I fired about 100 rounds of the Hornady Critical Defense and they were flawless in function and very accurate. u know having a Buffalo Bore in at least the last round of the magazine would not be a bad idea. That bigger power round is almost like a slide lock. When it gbeaks your wrists on that last shot, u will know u are out of ammo and need another magazine ;D ;D ;D

Precisely Bernie. I am now using TWO rounds of Buffalo Bore hard cast as round 5 and 6. I also like Double Tap for the first 4.

I tried some Buffalo Bore JHP and you guys weren't kidding about the sheer power that stuff has, put the Cor-Bon JHP to shame in both noise and recoil catagories. Pretty potent .380 round for sure, but not really punishing to shoot IMO. Pity it (and those Gold Dots) are so pricey...

I did some comparison testing with the CD along with other brands. It delivers what it promises - expansion, regardless of circumstances. The drawback to any sort of testing is that only medium for which results are really relevant - the bodies of BGs - is one we can't use for testing. So, we have to take test results and make some guesses.

There is no way around the laws of physics - for a given load there will always be a tradeoff between expansion and penetration. Loads that expand more are going to penetrate less, and vice versa. With a relatively low powered round like the .380, penetration is going to be marginal anyway. Add a lot of expansion to that and you have a bullet which is going to tear a large but shallow wound. I think they would be the cat's meow in higher powered rounds where overpenetration is an issue - like .38 +P and .357. But, for the .380 I am going to favor penetration over expansion. I'm going to do my tests on BB, Corbon, DPX, and Golden Sabers as soon as the weather warms up, but based on what I've tested so far I would use CCI Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST, and Magtech Golden Guardians in that order. I got less penetration (but more expansion) out of the CD than from Hornady's ordinary XTP/JHP - which is a load I would skip all around.
