I read it could be done so I gave it a try. Worked like a champ, but POI was expectedly higher than 10mm. Not overly concerned about damaging the extractor because it's an easy peasy fix. Anyone else do this? What's your experience?

I wouldn't do it. Headspace is dependent upon the mouth of the case. You'd be a little bit out of headspace.

Now you could try to get an aftermarket 40 S&W barrel for the SR1911. Glock 20 owners can get a 40 S&W barrel.
